91.3717 Components Reclassified to Archives, 2017-2020

The Panza Collection included 27 works attributed to Donald Judd when acquired by the Guggenheim Foundation in 1990-1992. The PCI Judd case study addressed several key issues at stake in this group of objects, including Judd’s practice of delegated fabrication; his particular objectives and concerns with respect to materials and methods of construction; and his complex, multi-decade relationship with Giuseppe Panza. The PCI focused on groups of both unrealized and unauthorized works that entered the Guggenheim collection, and addressed their status through the development of a new collections category called Decommissioned (DC).

Three full-length illustrated artwork history documents are available online in subseries A. Artworks: DC91.3722 Untitled, 1972 ("seven plywood cubes, open backs"); DC91.730 Untitled, 1974 ("wall of boxes, galvanized iron, closed backs"); and DC92.4149 Untitled, 1974 ("galvanized iron wall"). Documents that entered the Guggenheim Collection during the Panza Collection acquisition were examined and reclassified when appropriate during the PCI, and these items are listed in subseries A. Artworks. For Donald Judd, 110 documents were reclassified to archives. As part of the PCI, 20 drawings in the Guggenheim collection were re-cataloged; within the finding aid, they are both listed by their accession numbers and, when applicable, linked as related drawings to corresponding artworks.

Interviews were conducted with significant associates of the artist, including past fabricators, assistants, and gallerists. Records related to these interviews can be found under subseries B. Interviews.
